Did you spend Christmas day filing your personal tax return?

With less than 30 days to file your Self Assessment tax return, it seems that some of the most popular days to do this – have already ‘been and gone.’

The number of people filing their Self Assessment tax returns on Christmas Day has shot up to 4,757 which is a 10% hike, HMRC revealed.

Meantime, an additional 127 people forwent New Year celebrations and filled in their tax return between midnight and 00:59 on 1 January – what a way to start the year!

Over the three-day festive period, a total of 25,769 taxpayers submitted their tax return, up from 22,060 last year. Boxing Day was the most popular day with 12,136 filing and a further 8,876 found the time on Christmas Eve.

New Year’s Day was another busy day with 23,724 taxpayers taking time out to complete a return with mid-afternoon being the most popular time.

The peak time was between 12:00 and 12:59 on Boxing Day, when 1,121 returns were received by HMRC.

Of course, there is now a limited time to get the returns filed, to ensure it is done ahead of the 31 January deadline, and of course you still have until 31 January 2024 to pay the bill!

For those who cannot pay in full by the deadline need to contact HMRC as soon as possible, as they may be able to set up a ‘Time to Pay’ arrangement online if the amount owed is less than £30,000.
