Odoo v20: What the Latest Developments Mean for Your Business
Odoo Experience 2026 gave us at Kennedys Accounting plenty to think about.
While there were developments across almost every part of the Odoo platform, one message came through particularly strongly: Odoo v20 is making greater use of AI and automation to reduce manual work and make the system easier to use.
But what does that actually mean for businesses using Odoo?
Here are some of the developments we think could make a real difference.
AI that can do more than make suggestions
One of the most interesting developments is the introduction of AI agents with ‘write access’.
Previously, AI could help suggest actions or provide information. Odoo v20 takes this further, allowing AI to create and update records and carry out processes based on natural-language instructions.
This could ultimately reduce the amount of repetitive administration required by finance and other teams.
For example, rather than manually carrying out a series of steps, a user could potentially instruct Odoo to complete a process using a straightforward natural-language request.
Of course, with greater automation comes greater responsibility. Businesses need appropriate controls around who can access information and what automated processes are allowed to do – particularly when financial data is involved.
AI could help identify bookkeeping errors
For finance teams, one particularly interesting development is the potential for AI automation to identify bookkeeping errors and make batch updates.
Anyone who has spent time working through a large number of transactions will understand the potential benefit.
Rather than identifying and correcting every individual transaction manually, AI could help identify patterns and allow appropriate corrections to be made in batches.
That could save time and allow accountants and finance teams to concentrate on reviewing the information rather than simply processing it.
Bank reconciliation could become much easier
Another development that caught our attention was improved bulk reconciliation for bank transactions.
Bank reconciliation is an essential accounting process, but it can also be time-consuming, particularly for businesses with large volumes of transactions.
Greater automation and bulk reconciliation could reduce the amount of manual processing required while still allowing the finance team to review and control the results.
Paying suppliers directly through Odoo
Odoo is also making it possible for vendors to be paid directly through the system without the need to export payment files and move between different platforms.
For businesses already using Odoo across their purchasing and accounting processes, this is another step towards having a genuinely connected finance function.
The fewer separate systems and manual transfers involved, the easier it can be to maintain a clear audit trail and efficient processes.
Connecting Odoo with external AI
Another significant development is MCP (Model Context Protocol) integration.
This allows external AI tools such as ChatGPT, Claude and Cursor to connect directly with Odoo, subject to the appropriate access permissions.
The potential here is considerable. External AI assistants could be able to read or write ERP data while respecting the user’s Odoo access rights.
For businesses, this could eventually mean being able to interact with their ERP system in much more natural and flexible ways.
But again, this needs to be approached carefully. Connecting AI to financial and commercial information brings questions around security, permissions, accuracy and oversight.
It’s not just about AI
Although AI was one of the biggest themes at Odoo Experience, Odoo v20 isn’t just about artificial intelligence.
There are also improvements across the wider platform, including a refreshed user interface, improvements to CRM and sales, new manufacturing and inventory functionality and enhanced communication tools.
For example, Odoo is introducing AI-driven lead generation using a directory containing hundreds of millions of entities, alongside automatic pipeline assignment.
There are also improvements to integrated video calls, screen sharing, transcription, WhatsApp and live chat.
The overall direction is clear: Odoo is continuing to develop as an increasingly connected platform across the whole business.
What does this mean for your finance team?
For businesses already using Odoo, the developments in Odoo v20 are potentially significant.
But new functionality doesn’t automatically mean better accounting.
Your Odoo setup, chart of accounts, VAT configuration, processes, permissions and bookkeeping all still need to be properly managed. And as more automation is introduced, having appropriate controls and oversight becomes even more important.
This is where we believe having an accountant who understands both accounting and Odoo is particularly valuable.
At Kennedys Accounting, we don’t just look at the numbers. We understand how the accounting needs to work within Odoo and how the system can be used to support your wider business.
Whether you’re considering moving to Odoo, already using it or struggling with the accounting side, we’d be happy to talk through what the latest developments could mean for your business.
Odoo is becoming more powerful. The opportunity now is to make sure your business is getting the benefit from it.
